Edelman PR in fake blog controversy

PR agency Edelman has been under intense fire the last few days for being involved in a pro-Wal-Mart blog, but not being open about who the sponsor is. MediaPost writes about the blog called “Wal-Marting Across America”:

“The blog, launched Sept. 27, was profiled in this week’s issue of BusinessWeek, which exposed the site as a promotional tactic engineered by Working Families for Wal-Mart (WFWM), an organization launched by Wal-Mart’s public relations firm Edelman. WFWM paid for the RV [Recreational Vehicle ]and all travel expenses, rerouted the trip’s original plan, and plastered a logo on the RV’s side. Though a banner ad announced WFWM sponsored the site, it did not divulge Wal-Mart paid for the couple’s RV, gas, food and other expenses.”

It took a few days until Richard Edelman responded with an apology.

“I want to acknowledge our error in failing to be transparent about the identity of the two bloggers from the outset. This is 100% our responsibility and our error; not the client’s.”

Text 100 opens office in Second Life

Second Life is a very popular online social network, “a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents”. I’ve never looked at the site myself but I have a tiny grasp of what the community is about thanks to the For Immediate Release podcast. Now PR Week reports that PR agency Text 100 is set to open an office on its private island in Second Life. Apparently more and more businesses are exploring the online virtual worlds in order to learn more.

Update: BL Ochman isn’t convinced this is an entirely good idea.

Enfant terrible of the PR industry

Amanda Chapel’s Strumpette (the Gawker of PR?) is a brand new addition to the PR blogosphere and by the looks of the first post, is sure to stir up a bus load of controversy. And maybe this is just what the cozy family of PR bloggers needed, a storm in a B-cup, sorry, tea cup. Steve Rubel takes a beating in the first post here.

However, infOpinions senses there’s something fishy about the site.

“We all know that Strumpette is more likely to be a fat, fifty-ish, fool of a guy with a gut the size of his ego than some cute PR bunny.”

We’ll see about that. Let’s just say that anyone that registers a domain through Domains by Proxy isn’t exactly starting off with a bag full of trust.

2006 a promising year for Swedish PR

It seems like 2006 might become a very good year for the Swedish public relations industry, according to a survey by the PR association Precis. 57 percent of its companies say that order levels are better today than last quarter and 68 percent expect next quarter to be better than the current.

Nearly 80 percent of the PR agencies expect to have increased the number of employees the next quarter. Marketing communications and media relations are the two disciplines that have been increasing in demand the most from last quarter and the industries with the highest increase in demand are IT/tech, health/pharma and food.
